First Quarter 1994 Status Report March 31, 1994
Golden Grain Company, Manteca Bean Facility, 229 Moffat Blvd , Manteca, CA 4
The sod vapor extraction and groundwater treatment systems ran continuously this quarter except
for four occasions The following is a list of the days that the remediation system was not
operational
12/24/93 -01/03/94 The lead scrubber heater wires were burned and needed to
be replaced The extended down time resulted from wanting
for parts necessary to make repairs The wires burned as a
direct result of the fuse block and solid state relay failure
that occurred in September 1993
01/07/94 - 01/10/94 Normal water build-up in vapor extraction underground
pipelines filled the moisture knockouts and caused the
system to shut down as a result increased vacuum and high
pressure in the vapor system
02/08/94 System was automatically shut down as a result of a high
LEL alarm condition The condition was traced back to
moisture in the vapor lines which made the LEL sensors trip
to an alarm condition
02/17/94 Normal water build-up within the underground vapor lines
During this quarter of operation, there were no releases of untreated groundwater or untreated
system effluent vapors System shutdowns were planned or triggered by the system interlock, which
functioned as designed to bring complete system shutdown in the event of equipment malfunction
Calculations using the TPH-G concentrations and system flow rates obtained during field visits
indicate that approximately 245 pounds of TPH-G were removed from the sod by the vapor
extraction system during this quarter The cumulative amount of hydrocarbons removed by the
vapor extraction system since startup is estimated at 3,236 pounds Less than 1 pound of TPH-G
was removed from the groundwater during this quarter Calculations for mass removal for the first
quarter are included in Attachment 3
During this reporting period, the vapor treatment system was monitored each week The influent
and effluent vapor concentrations were measured for TPH-G using an FID Values measured during
site visits this quarter as well as historical data to July 1993 are shown in Table 3 The average
destruction efficiency of 99 3 percent was calculated using weekly FID readings of the catalytic
oxidizer effluent vapor stream for the operational period from December 10, 1993, through
March 3, 1994 All effluent readings collected were below the 100 parts per million by
volume (ppmv) TPN-G discharge limit specified by the Unified Air Pollution Control District permit
(Permit No N-2625-1-0) to operate
55108014 020
GROUNDWATER
TECHNOLOGY,INC
