90189H-APH CON-12
local media, and individuals and organizations that have asked to be kept
informed. The current contact list, in Section 6, will be continually
updated by Lika in response to new requests for information.
2. To educate the community about the potential health risks
associated with exposure to hazardous materials found as contaminants at
the site.
Because most of the community is not knowledgeable about the potential
health risks of hazardous substances found at the site, Lika and DHS will
include information about risks in fact sheets and presentations at public
meetings. When information is presented to the public about concentrations
of contaminants in soil or groundwater at the site, comparative information
about concentrations in other places will be provided, as well as standards
for safe levels, to the extent that they are available. This was
accomplished in the draft RAP with the Endangerment Assessment and
discussion of Cleanup Levels. The fact sheet that reports the completion
of cleanup will address the issue of residual health risks.
3. To provide opportunities for ongoing two-way communication about
site-related issues and proposed site activities between the public and
DHS, and between the public and Lika Corporation.
Lika and DHS will use telephone contacts, public meetings, and public
comment periods as occasions for exchange of information about the site.
Lika and DHS will also be responsive to mail and telephone requests and
comments from the public and from city, county and state officials and
staff. The community relations interviews and telephone contacts were an
initial step in identifying the concerned public and establishing two-way
communication about findings and proposed cleanup plans.
In addition, a series of actions is underway to provide for public
input on the draft Remedial Action Plan. Lika has placed the draft RAP in
H-13
