Work Plan March 5, 1990
Proposed Unocal Station, Stockton, California AGS 30010-1W
possibility of downhole or crosshole contamination. The drilling will be performed under
the guidance of a field geologist, and the earth materials will be logged as drilled by the
Unified Soil Classification System.
Collecting Soil Samples
During drilling, soil samples will be collected at 5-foot or other appropriate intervals using
a California-modified, split-spoon sampler equipped with clean brass sleeves. Samples will
be collected by drilling the boring to a point just above the sampling depth and then driving
the sampler into the soil through the hollow center of the auger. The sampler will be
driven 18 inches with a standard 140-pound hammer dropped 30 inches. The number of
blows required to drive the sampler each successive 6-inch interval will be counted and
recorded on the field boring log to give an indication of soil consistency. Soil samples will
be collected, identified, and evaluated for relative levels of contamination using a
photoionization device (PID) when appropriate. Examples of the Field Boring Log, the
Unified Soil Classification System, and Log of Boring are included in the appendix to this
work plan.
Soil samples collected for possible chemical analysis will be promptly sealed with aluminum
foil, plastic caps, and tape. They will then be labeled and placed in iced storage for
transport to the analytical laboratory. A Chain of Custody Record will be initiated by the
7
Applied GeoSystems
