The shoul r that was'MENIAL
..
. R;
excavated is the property of San Joaquin County (Figure 2). When the tanker came to rest, the
impact caused an unknown volume of unleaded fuel to leak from the ruptured bulkheads of the
tanker compartments to site soils (Figure 2).
EMERGENCY RESPONSE AND SITE CHARACTERIZATION ACTIVITIES
The unleaded gasoline released during the accident burned for approximately 4 hours before
being extinguished. The spill area which is the property of San Joaquin County is depicted on
Figure 2. The owner of the residence at 22934 E. Mariposa Road adjacent to the excavation site
allowed Apex and crews to enter the property and stockpile any contaminated soil on visqueen
until proper arrangements could be made for the disposal.
On September 6, 2013,Apex advanced six soil borings (B-1 through B-6) at the locations shown
on Figure 2. To further define the area that had been impacted with unleaded fuel and quantify
the amount of soil that was needed to be excavated. The soil borings were advanced at the
locations where the highest contaminant concentrations were detected with the use of a photo
ionization detector(PID).
Soil borings B-1 and B-4 were advanced to a total depth of 15 feet below ground surface(bgs)
and soil borings B-2,B-3, B-5, and B-6 were advanced to a total depth of 4 feet bgs.
Groundwater was not encountered in any of the soil borings advanced.
Prior to drilling, permits were obtained from the SJCEHD and the public works department for
the advancement of soil borings B-1 through B-6. Underground Service Alert was contacted for
identification of buried utilities at or entering the project site from the public right-of-way.
Soil Sampling
Soil samples were collected continuously to total depth at soil borings B-1 through B-6. All soil
samples were screened in the field with the use of a photo ionization detector(PID), and were
classified using the Unified Soil Classification System(USCS). All fieldwork was conducted in
accordance with Apex standard operating procedures (SOP).
Samples submitted for analysis from soil borings B-1 and B-4 included the samples from 15 feet
bgs, the samples that exhibited the lowest PID reading.
Samples submitted for analysis from soil borings B-2,B-3, B-5, and B-6 included the samples
from 4 feet bgs, the samples that exhibited the lowest PID reading.
Samples were submitted, under chain-of-custody(COC) documentation, to a state-certified
laboratory for the analysis listed below. The laboratory analytical results are summarized in
Table 1.
