 • i
1
' METHODS
All operations were conducted with Pelagos Corporation's AELL/1000
' portable testing unit and sensors. Both were designed and developed
specifically for leak detection by Pelagos' engineers.
' SOUTHERN PACIFIC PIPE LINES, INC.
' Three eight—inch pipelines adjacent to Southern Pacific's Stockton
Terminal . Facility were tested utilizing current acoustic -emissions
' technology. The three pipelines were identified by Southern Pacific
personnel as "diesel", "main" and "Shell/Mobil" lines. Approximatley a
500-foot segment of each of the three pipelines was tested along Navy Drive
frontage to Time Oil Company and Tesoro Refinery porporties. Access to the
pipes at approximatley 100 foot intervals was provided by trenching with
backhoe equipment. Once the lines were exposed, small three inch patches
were cleaned to bare metal for AE sensor attachment. At each of these
' points along the pipelines an AE sensor was coupled magnetically to the
pipe. The acoustic levels of sixteen discrete frequencies were then
' monitored while the lines were under static pressure. Line pressure during
testing was held at 90 psi on the "Shell/Mobil" line , 120 psi on the
"diesel" line and 376 psi on the "main" line.
TESORO REFINING, MARKETING AND SUPPLY COMPANY
' Three six-inch pipelines identified by Tesoro Refining personnel as
their "no lead", "premium" and "regular" rack lines were monitored during a
' hydrostatic testing. The "no lead" and "regular" lines were monitored at a
point nearest their subterrainian excursion to Tesoro Refinings' loading
' racks. The "premium" line was monitored at a point approximatley 60 feet
from its underground excursion to the loading rack. The lines were under
50 psi static pressure during monitoring. The three lines were monitored
by attaching an AE sensor to a clean section of pipe and observing the
acoustic levels at sixteen switch selected frequencies.
