spirits, hydraulic oil,and zinc-oxide paint were observed along with three 5-gallon containers
of gasoline, and various small containers of paint and spray paints. The storage area showed
no evidence of significant releases.
• The principal manufacturing operations of American Modular Systems takes place in
Building C and consists mostly of welding steel frames. Two cutting saws utilize cutting oils.
Several five-gallon buckets of oil and some minor staining were observed around the base
of the units. Spray painting of the frames is performed on bare ground to the east of Building
C, adjacent to the storm water retention pond. Approximately five 55-gallon drums of
Aquatek waterborne red oxide primer were in use and another 13 drums of new Aquatek
paint were stored near the southern end of the building. Red paint covered the ground in the
painting area. One unlabeled drum in the drum storage area appeared to be used for waste
oil. Approximately one dozen 5-gallon containers of water soluble oil were stored in
mechanic's office on the southern end of the building. Building B was a mostly vacant
storage area. Building F is a truck repair shop(only half of this building was accessible).
• Minor amounts of water-based oil are utilized by Innovative Steel Systems for cutting metal
sheets. Truck maintenance is performed in the north end of Building E. One solvents parts
washers and several drums of oil were observed in this area. No significant staining was
observed.
• Only one small (30-gallon)drum of waste oil was observed at the Super Soil site, which has
only been in operation for the past two months.
4.2.2 Underground/Aboveeround Storage Tanks
Evidence of underground storage tanks(e.g.,fill ports or vent pipes)was not observed at the
subject property during the site reconnaissance. The following aboveground storage tanks(ASTs)
were observed:
• One 1,000-gallon AST and one 250-gallon diesel AST are located at the Super Soil facility
for fueling the front-end loader. The tanks are installed within double containment and no
evidence of releases were observed. The tanks are new, as the facility only began operation
two months ago.
• One approximately 500-gallon AST is located on a riser along the northern property
boundary near the middle of the site. The AST appeared to be empty or mostly-empty and
no longer utilized. The contents or former contents is unknown. Based on conversations with
the property owner, the tank may have been brought on-site by a grading or construction
contractor and likely contained diesel fuel. Some staining was observed on the soil beneath
R:\MN\98JCM.013 11
DAMES&MOORE
