' Levine-Fricke-Recon
Section:7 -
Date Initiated: September 23, 1996
Revision No.: 1
Date Revised:August 21, 1998
7.0 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
7.1 Purpose
The purpose of PPE is to protect employees from hazards and potential hazards they
are likely to encounter during investigative activities.
7.2 Description of Levels of Protection
Levels of protection have been defined by EPA in the EPA Standard Operating Guide,
1984, although there are numerous variations and modifications possible with each
level. These levels are summarized below.
Level A. Specifies a fully encapsulating, chemical-resistant suit and supplied-air
respirator (SAR) or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Level A PPE provides
the highest available level of respiratory and dermal protection. This level of PPE is
not applicable to this project.
Level B. Specifies chemical-resistant clothing and SAR or SCBA. Level B PPE
provides the highest available level of respiratory protection coupled with varying
degrees of dermal protection (dermal protection may be modified according to hazards
present). This level of PPE is not applicable to this project.
Level C. Specifies chemical-resistant clothing and air-purifying respirator (APR) fitted
with appropriate filter cartridges. Level C PPE provides the same level of dermal
protection as Level B, but a lower level of respiratory protection. This level of PPE
may be required for activities at the Site if air monitoring data indicate that site-
specific action levels defined in Section 8.3, are exceeded.
Level D. Level D PPE is essentially a work uniform. This level of PPE provides no
respiratory protection and only minimal skin protection. Chemical-resistant clothing
may be used when inadvertent contact with chemically impacted materials is
anticipated. This level of PPE would be appropriate for activities at the Site if air
monitoring data indicate that site-specific action levels have not been exceeded.
7.2.1 Level D Personal Protective Equipment
Site activities will commence in Level D PPE. Air monitoring will be routinely
1 conducted using real-time air monitoring devices to determine if upgrading to Level C
is necessary. Level D will be permitted as long as air monitoring data indicate that
airborne concentrations of chemicals of concern are maintained below the site-specific
RIFSWP-AppF-Rev1-04111:SRL Page F-21
