Work Plan: Prior to commencing work,the Contractor shall submit for the Engineer's <br /> approval, a work plan detaining the specific methods, procedures, and sequencing to be used <br /> in abandonment of the well. <br /> 3.04 DEMOLITION OF THE IRRIGATION WELL <br /> A. Temporary Cover: During all periods when no work is being done on the well, it shall be <br /> covered. The well cover shall consist of a steel plate welded to the top of the casing to prevent <br /> the introduction of any foreign matter into the well. <br /> B. Removal of Pump,Tank and Electrical Equipment: Prior to abandoning the well, the <br /> Contractor shall remove and dispose of the deep well pump, tank, and all other appurtenant <br /> equipment as shown on the plans.The Contractor shall salvage to the Owner all items <br /> specifically called out on the plans.The Contractor will make arrangements for all utility <br /> company services to be abandoned prior to commencement of work and remove and dispose <br /> of all electrical equipment. <br /> C. Sounding the well: After all pumping plant equipment has been removed,the Contractor shall <br /> sound out the depth of the well and calculate the quantity of cement grout to be placed in the <br /> well.The Engineer shall be provided a copy of the well log as described previously. <br /> D. Containment of water expelled from the well: <br /> 1. Water discharged from the well during grouting operations shall be considered as <br /> hazardous and shall not be discharged to the ground or any public sewer. The contractor <br /> shall provide a method of collecting and containing water displaced from the well. Water <br /> shall be pumped into a containment tank during grouting operations. <br /> 2. After sealing of the well has been completed, a sample of the water from the well shall be <br /> retrieved and tested for the presence of hydrocarbons. If the hydrocarbon level of the <br /> water is below State Standards, and the County Health Department agrees, the water <br /> may be discharged to the storm water drainage system. If the level is higher than State <br /> Standard, the Contractor shall arrange, and pay for disposal at an approved site, <br /> 3. If discharge to water to the storm system is allowed, care shall be taken not to discharge <br /> any cementious materials into the storm system. Water containing cement shall be <br /> disposed of on-site in an approved manner. <br /> E. Sealing the well: <br /> 1. The top fifteen (15) feet of the well shall be ripped with a mill slot knife to allow sealing of <br /> the top strata. <br /> a) Wire line explosive charges shall be set in the well from a depth of 15 below grade. <br /> Explosive charges shall be spaced at intervals not exceeding 10 feet generallas in <br /> Table 1, attached hereto. <br /> 2. A tremie pipe shall be installed to within 60 feet of the bottom of the well and cement <br /> sealing grout shall then be installed.The tremie pipe shall be gradually withdrawn as the <br /> grout rises in the casing until the grout reaches the surface. <br /> 3. The wireline charges shall be detonated to create holes in the existing casing and allow <br /> grout to migrate outside the casing. <br /> 4. From the time cement sealing grout is installed in the well, through detonation of the wire <br /> line charges, through topping off of the sealing grout, demolition of the well shall be <br /> conducted as a single, continuous operation. <br /> 5. The Contractor shall be prepared to pump additional cement sealing grout into the well <br /> immediately after charges have been detonated and shall continue to fill the well with <br /> grout until the grout level stabilizes at the top of the casing. <br /> 02675-3 <br />
