B. Various types of portable fire extinguishers are
strategically located throughout the facility to
fight the types of incipient fire He. A, B or C
type) most likely to occur in those areas.
C. The plant's main fire well-pump can be powered by a
diesel generator set to supply the required flow of
water at a minimum pressure of 65 psig to the fire
hydrants, foam extinguishing systems, or automatic
sprinkler systems.
In event of an incipient fire ( ie. waste basket fire),
all employees will be trained to use portable
extinguishing equipment. If the fire cannot be
contained with the portable extinguishing equipment, a
general alarm will be actuated to alert all plant
personnel and the local fire department. The fire pump
is designed to start up automatically on low pressure
and to deliver an estimated flowrate of 1,000 gpm to the
fire water mains. Water for domestic and service uses
will be delivered by a small jockey pump.
The fire protection system is designed based on a single
postulated fire at any one time. It is assumed that a
fire will be confined to the fire area where the fire
originated, by using automatic system and/or manual fire
hoses available to that fire area.
All equipment used for the fire protection system will
be standard equipment conforming to the requirements
specified by NFPA. Mechanical and electrical equipment
used will be UL approved for fire protection services,
as required by NFPA.
The major fire areas of the facility are as follows:
A. Resource Recovery Area
The resource recovery area will have oil tanks, a diesel
fuel tank and oil processing equipment. The tanks will
be protected by foam extinguishing systems. In
addition, the perimeter of the tank farm will be
protected by fire hydrants, located at no more than 250
foot intervals, equipped with hoses and nozzles.
Portable fire extinguishers will be located within each
area required for fighting incipient fires.
B. Briquette Storage Building
The briquette storage building will contain the product
briquette pile. This building will be protected by an
automatic sprinkler system (or equivalent). The
perimeter of the building will be protected by fire
16
