hydrants, located at no more than 250 foot intervals,
equipped with hoses and nozzles.
C. Office and Electrical Buildings
The office building will be protected by portable fire
extinguishers, smoke detection system and an automatic
sprinkler system. Electrical building panels will be
protected by a halon fire suppression system. The
perimeter of this building will also be protected by
fire hydrants equipped with hoses and nozzles.
D. Biomass Handling Area
This area will have piles of agricultural biomass (ie.
orchard prunings, field crops) . The perimeters of the
area will be protected by fire hydrants, equipped with
hoses and nozzles, located at no more than 250 foot
intervals. Piles will be segmented to allow access for
fire control .
E. Substation
The substation contains oil-filled transformers, which
will be protected by a fire hydrant and hose equipped
with a fog nozzle.
F. Drying Equipment
Each dryer is equipped with infrared spark detectors to
actuate the fire protection system. The actuation
signal : 1) initiates water spray to deluge nozzles
mounted in the reversing screw housing, 2) stops
additional feedstock from entering the dryer, 3) shuts
off the fuel supply to the burner, and 4) reverses the
direction of the fire dump screws to dump the wet
charred material to a concrete bunker.
3.0 CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION EMPLOYMENT
3.1 Onsite
The facility will require continuous manning to operate and
maintain the plant. A listing of the proposed plant operations
staff is shown in Table 3.1. The plant will normally operate on a
three shift basis. The bulk of maintenance and fuel handling will
be done during daylight hours. Regular daytime weekday shifts
will be manned by the plant manager, maintenance personnel, clerk,
and traffic manager. Another 20-30 jobs will be needed to provide
indirect services to the plant, i.e. maintenance, landscaping,
etc.
17
