Interim Groundwater Treatment System
O eration Maintenance and Monitoring Manual
2.0 START UP/SHUT DOWN PROCEDURES
2.1 START.UP PROCEDURE
Pre-check
1. Prior to operation, the carbon in each vessel must be wetted with clean water and allowed
to de-aerate. First, the adsorber's vent line should be opened to to the atmosphere, then
clean water should be introduced into the adsorber's outlet connection and the water filled
vessel should set for about 24 hours. After this time, close the vent line and reconnect
the outlet piping.
2. Visually inspect carbon vessels, manifold, and visble piping joints to make sure
everything is in place and properly connected with no liquid leaks.
3. Check water level in extraction well to insure that static level is at least 3 feet above the
level of the pump motor.
4. Check position of groundwater flow control valves:
a. When starting the pump for the first time, the discharge valve should be
closed approximately one-third.
b. Carbon units should be plumbed in series.
c. Holding tank discharge valve should be closed until Iaboratory results
confirm non-detect results and/or WDR permit has been issued.
Startup
1. If everything above is OK flip pump circuit breaker to the on position.
2. The pump should take approximately 2 seconds to develop full pressure upon initial
startup.
3. Once the pump is operational, adjust the well valve to achieve the desired flow rate.
4. Monitor drawdown in the well to ensure that the pump always remains submerged.
5. Monitor the flow rate to ensure proper cooling of the pump. The pump should not be
operated at less than 0.2 gpm.
6. You may need to adjust the fluid level switches for optimum operation based upon
drawdown.
roeklo&mmanl
