Brown and Caldwell personnel met with Mr. Ron Rowe (PHS/EHD) on May 21, 1999 to inspect the UST over excavation that was conducted by T&T Trucking. Based on the two areas that were over excavated, as shown on Figure 1, BC proposoto collect three soil samples from those two areas. The purpose of the three samples is jto characterize the lateral and vertical extent of contamination. Proposed sample WOX-17 (West end, Over eXcavation at 17 feet bgs) will be collected from the bottom of theover excavated cavity on the southwest end. The bottom of the cavity floor was measured at approximately 15 feet bgs by BC on May 21, 1999. PHS/EHD required soil samplesi be collected at least 2-3 feet below the bottom of the excavation, therefore, soil samples collected to determine vertical extent will be collected from approximately 17 feet bgs. Proposed sample EOX-17 will be collected on the east end of the excavation where over excavation extended approximately 12-14 feet to the east. The sample will be collected:approximately in the center of the excavation at approximately:17 feet bgs. The proposed sample SEOX-14 will a be collected from the southeast wall where a lens of diesel-impacted soil was removed. All samples are proposed to be collected from a backhoe bucket using!the same protocol as described above and under the supervision of PHS/EHD. Exhibit B includes pictures of the former diesel UST excavation taken on May 21, 1999. All soil samples will be analyzed for TPHd and BETX using EPA3Methods 8015 modified and 8020, respectively. Soil samples will be analyzed on a 48-hour turn around basis in order to evaluate if additional over excavation is warranted. Analytical results will be forwarded to PHS/EHD for review. Upon review by PHS/EHD over excavation will ' either continue in those areas identified by PHS/EHD or the excavation will be backfilled with clean material upon approval by PHS/EHD. Exhibit C describes Brown and Caldwell field procedures for soil sampling, sampling from stockpiles and excavations, and sample handling.
