Wratten pertntmon to drill and
install a monitoring well was obtained from the manager of the Kentucky Fried Chicken
All four monitoring wells were drilled to 70 feet below ground level and screened from 50 to
70 feet (Appendix F) All soil samples were screened with a portable PID (Photo Ionization
Detector) and laboratory samples were taken from MW-3 & 4 at five-foot intervals from 20
feet to the water table Samples were selected for analysis by the on-site geologist based on
odor, discoloration, and PID readings (Appendix D, Table 5 & 6) Stockpiled soil from the
soil vapor well area (Figure 3) was sampled and characterized for disposal (Tables 3 & 4,
Appendix A,B &C)
The vertical and lateral limits of contamination were not sufficiently defined with these four
wells (MW 1, 2, 3 & 4) WHF proposed four additional "step-out" monitoring wells to fully
characterize the groundwater contamination plume San Joaquin County Environmental
Health Division granted approval on January 19, 1994, and WHF returned to the site and
installed four additional groundwater monitoring wells under the same well permit and drilling
contractor
Between March 9 and 11, 1994, WHF, Inc installed four (4) two-inch (2") groundwater
monitoring wells MW-5, 6, 7& 8 (Figure 2) MV6f-5 was installed,with written permission, in
the hack parking lot of Kentucky Fried Chicken It is a "down-gradient" well, and was drilled
to a depth of 70 feet below ground level and screened from 50 to 70 feet MW-6 and 7 were
installed to the west and south of the soil vapor extraction well network, respectively Both
were drilled to 65 feet below ground level and screened from 45 to 65 feet MW-8 was
installed at the far southeast comer of the site, and was also 65 feet deep and screened from 45
to 65 feet
Soil samples were taken from each well at five-foot intervals from 20 feet to the water table
and screened with a PID meter Laboratory samples were selected for analysis by WHF's on-
site geologist based on odor, discoloration, and PID readings(Appendix D and F)
Da*illin
31 g
Permits were obtained for aU wells before drilling began The soil borings were
accomplished using a mobile mounted drilling ng employing the use of a hollow stem
flight auger of 8-inch o d All drilling equipment was thoroughly steam-cleaned both
before drilling began, to prevent the introduction of contamination from off site, and
between borings,to prevent cross contamination
The borings were logged under the direct supervision of a registered professional using
the Unified Soil Classifiicataon System (Appendix H) The color, texture, moisture,
