I11 August 1997
• AGE-NC Project No 95-0173
I3 0. FINDINGS
3 1 FIELD EVIDENCE OF HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED SOIL AND GROUND WATER
Moderate to strong petroleum hydrocarbon odors were noted in samples collected from VW-2 at 20
to 30 feet bsg Furthermore, organic vapors were detected (using a PID) at concentrations up to 547
' parts per million (ppm)
Faint petroleum hydrocarbon odors were noted in samples collected from soil probe borings B-3, B-4,
B-6 and wells VW-1, MW-6 and MW-9 at 20 to 40 feet bsg Additionally, organic vapors were
detected in these samples at concentrations up to 237 ppm
I Neither organic vapor nor hydrocarbon odor were detected during field activities from soil samples
collected from soil probe borings B-5, B-7, B-8, or from«ells MW-5, MW-7 and MW-8
ISlight to moderate petroleum hydrocarbon odors were detected in grab ground water samples
collected from soil probe borings B-3, B-4, B-6 and B-7 The sample collected from B-3 appeared
to contain significantly stronger hydrocarbon odors than the other samples
Furthermore, moderate to strop petroleum hydrocarbon odors were noted in quarterly round water
strong Y q Yg
samples collected from wells MW-1 through MW-4, while faint petroleum hydrocarbon odors were
noted in samples collected from wells NIW-6 and MW-8
I3 2 ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF SOIL SAMPLES
I A total of twenty-nine soil samples were submitted to a state-certified laboratory for analysis of TPH-
g, TPH-d, BTE&X and MTBE TPH-g was detected in soil samples collected from soil probe borings
B-3, B-4, B-6, and wells MW-6, VW-1 and VW-2 The highest concentrations of TPH-g was
reported from VW-2 (20-feet) at 6,600 ppm, while the lowest was reported from MW-6 (25-feet)
at 1 9 ppm
TPH-d was detected in soil samples collected from soil probe borings B-3, B-4, B-6, and wells MW-
6, VW-1 and VW-2 The highest concentration of TPH-d was reported in the 20-foot sample from
VW-2 at 3,900 ppm, while the lowest was reported in the 25-foot sample from N W-6 at 1 2 ppm
However, the results of the laboratory report indicated that the chromatograms of TPH-d are not
consistent with those of diesel characteristics
Benzene was detected in soil samples collected from soil probe borings B-3, B-6, and wells MW-6,
MW-9, VW-1 and VW-2 The highest concentration of benzene was reported in the 35-foot sample
Ifrom VW-2 at 5 1 ppm, while the Iowest was reported in the 30-foot sample from VW-I at 0 0054
