If there is <br /> evidence of a possible cave-in or slide, all work shall cease until the <br /> necessary safeguards have been taken. <br /> Excavated material shall be placed far enough from the edge of the <br /> excavation so that it does not fall back (a minimum of two feet from the <br /> edge). <br /> Flammability Hazards <br /> The nature of this project and the operations to be performed may <br /> increase volatilization and cause a flammability hazard. Some solvents <br /> can be extremely flammable. Oxidation products from burning can be <br /> extremely deadly. Gasoline's lower explosive limit (LEL) is 1.4% (14,000 <br /> ppm) by volume in air and can form pockets in low areas due to its <br /> density relative to air. <br /> All electrical equipment used during the project will be inspected to <br /> ensure that they are in good repair and have no frayed or loose <br /> connections before they may be used on site. Only approved, listed <br /> equipment and components will be used. All connections will be made in <br /> accordance with National Electric Code practices. All equipment and <br /> devices so designed will be properly grounded or bonded to an adequate <br /> grounding mechanism. Although explosive limits are not expected, onlv <br /> equipment listed as explosion proof will be used in areas where <br /> explosivity is sustained at or above five percent of the LEL. <br /> Heat Stress Concerns <br /> Heat stress is the combination of both environmental and physical work <br /> factors that contribute to the total heat load imposed on the body. <br /> Environmental factors that contribute to heat stress include air <br /> temperature, radiant heat exchange, air movement, and humidity. <br /> The body's response to heat stress is reflected in the degree of symptoms. <br /> When the stress is excessive for the exposed individual, a feeling of <br /> discomfort or distress may result and a heat-related disorder may ensue. <br /> The severity of the response will depend not only on the magnitude of the <br /> prevailing stress, but also on the age, physical fitness, degree of <br /> acclimatization, and dehydration of the worker. <br /> 4-5 <br />
