r
1 by the Engineer in a manner which will show by test an equal bearing strength with the
2 undisturbed foundation material.
3
4 B. Bracing Sheeting and Shoring: Care shall be exercised in excavating for lower footings not
5 to disturb bearing under higher adjacent footings or structures. Where shown on the
6 drawings and where considered necessary by the Engineer, existing structures and
z pipework shall be adequately braced and cared for so that no damage will result. The
6 Contractor shall submit structural calculations and drawings signed and sealed by a civil
9 engineer registered in the State of California showing members, connections, and
10 anchorage of the proposed bracing, sheeting, and shoring. The Contractor shall provide
11 suitable sheeting and shoring, where necessary, for protection of the excavations. All such
12 sheeting and shoring shall be removed unless otherwise specifically authorized.
13
14 C. Unsuitable Materials: To suit field conditions, excavation below the depths shown may be
15 ordered, but changes may only be made as directed. Soft, spongy, or unsuitable bearing
16 material of any kind shall be entirely removed down to solid bearings and replaced with an
17 engineered fill as specified herein. In such event only the excess excavation and fill will
16 be paid for as extra work.
19
20 D. Dewatering: Any water that may be encountered or that may accumulate in excavations
1 21 shall be removed and kept out by pumping or other approved methods, and all construction
22 shall be carried on in the dry. Water shall be kept down until structures are complete to
23 above water, safe from uplift and horizontal water pressure and the backfill has been
24 placed.
2s
26 E. Approval of Excavation: The Contractor shall notify the Engineer when excavation for a
27 structure is complete and no forms, reinforcing steel or concrete, shall be placed until the
26 excavation has been approved by the Engineer.
29
30 F. Disposal of Waste Excavation: Excavated material determined by the Engineer to be
31 unsuitable, or in excess of the amounts required for backfill shall be disposed off-site at no
32 additional cost to the Owner.
33
34 3.03 ENGINEERED FILL
35
36 A. General: All fill under structures and at other locations where indicated on the drawings
37 shall be made using engineered fill, carefully controlled and compacted on a prepared
36 surface.
39
40 B. Surface Preparation: The surface on which fill is to be placed shall be free of all vegetation,
41 debris, or other objectionable material, and all large roots shall be grubbed out to a depth
42 of at least 2 feet below footing or slab elevations. The surface shall be scarified to a depth
43 of 6 inches and compacted to dry densities in excess of 95 percent of the maximum dry
44 density. It may be necessary to adjust the moisture content of the subgrade soil by
45 watering or aeration to bring the moisture content of the soil near optimum in order that the
46 specified densities can be obtained.
47
' 46 C. Placement of Fill:
49
so 1. Fill materials shall be spread in layers and shall have a uniform moisture content that
51 will provide the specified dry density after compaction. If necessary to obtain uniform
52 distribution of moisture, water shall be added to each layer by sprinkling and the soil
STRUCTURE EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL
051194 022253
f
