i
excavation and embankment construction are to be conducted, or storage of excavated
materials or fill is to be made. Stripping shall be minimal so as not to remove much of
underlying soil (maximum 4 inches).

All cleared material shall become the property of the Contractor and shall be disposed of
at a location off the site in a manner satisfactory to the Engineer at the Contractor's
expense.
,9 3.02 EXCAVATION

A. Excavation in ponds shall be done to the dimensions and levels indicated on the drawings
or specified herein. Excavated material, after approval of Engineer, shall be used for
embankment construction.

B. Disposal of Waste Excavation: Excavated material determined by the Engineer to be
unsuitable, or in excess of the amounts required for embankments, shall be disposed on
site at no additional cost to the Owner at locations shown on the plans.
i 19 3.03 EMBANKMENTS

A. General: All embankments shall be made using engineered fill, carefully controlled and
compacted on a prepared surface.

B. Surface Preparation: The surface on which fill is to be placed shall be free of all
vegetation, debris, or other objectionable material, and all large roots shall be grubbed out
to a depth of at least 2 feet below base. The surface shall be scarified to a depth of 6
inches and compacted to at least 95 percent of the maximum dry density. It may be
necessary to adjust the moisture content of the subgrade soil by watering or aeration to ,
bring the moisture content of the soil near optimum in order that the specified densities can
be obtained. Surface shall be approved by Engineer before placing fill.

C. Placement of Fill: Fill materials shall be spread in layers and shall have a uniform moisture i
content that will provide the specified dry density after compaction. If necessary to obtain
uniform distribution of moisture, water shall be added to each layer by sprinkling and the
soil disced, harrowed, or otherwise manipulated after the water is added. If the material is
too wet, the moisture content shall be reduced as necessary by spreading and aerating.
The layers of the fill material shall not exceed 6 inches and each layer shall be compacted
with suitable compaction equipment to provide the specified dry densities.

The dry density of the compacted fill shall be at least 95 percent of the maximum dry
density. Field density tests shall be performed to check the compaction of the fill materials.
If the dry densities are not satisfactory, the Contractor will be required to increase the
weight of the roller or the number of passes as required to produce the specified densities.

Where trenches must be excavated in embankments for pipelines, these trenches shall be
excavated when the fill is at least two feet above the top of the pipe and backfilled with the
fill materials excavated. The backfill shall be placed in 6-inch layers and each layer
compacted to provide densities as specified above. Care shall be taken not to damage '
pipe. Backfill placed adjacent to walls shall be placed in a similar manner to that specified
so for backfill in excavated trenches.

EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION
02226-2
