Masonry shall not be laid at temperatures below 40 degrees F, without the approval of the <br /> 6 Engineer, and all work shall be done in such a manner as to insure the proper and normal <br /> ' 7 hardening of all mortar. All masonry work shall be so protected and heated that the <br /> e temperature at the surface will not fall below 50 degrees F for a period of 72 hours after <br /> 9 placing. Any completed work found to be affected by freezing shall be taken down and <br /> 10 rebuilt by the Contractor at his expense. <br /> 11 <br /> 12 B. All CMU shall be laid in a full bed of mortar, applied to shells only. Butter the vertical joint <br /> ' 13 of unit already set in the wall and all contact faces of the unit to be set. Each unit shall be <br /> 14 placed and shoved against 'he unit previously laid so as to produce a well-compacted <br /> 15 vertical mortar joint for the full shell thickness. Units shall set with all cells in a vertical <br /> 16 position. The moisture content of the units when laid shall not exceed 35 percent of the <br /> ' 17 total absorption as determined by laboratory test. <br /> 1e <br /> 19 C. CMU shall be laid in stretcher (running) bond with units machine sawn at panel ends to <br /> 20 produce the proper bonding as approved. Tool dense and neat. <br /> 21 <br /> 22 D. Sizes shall be as specified and called for on the Drawings, and where "Soaps" and "Splits" <br /> 23 are used, the space between these members and the backup material shall be slushed full <br /> ' 24 of mortar. <br /> 25 <br /> 26 E. Joints of all masonry shall be tooled in accordance with the following: <br /> ' 22 <br /> 28 1. Wait until unit mortar is thumb-print hard before tooling joint. This may require as <br /> 29 much as 3 hours in the shade and 1 hour in the sun in the summertime. <br /> ' 30 <br /> 31 2. The required personnel of the Contractor shall be kept on the job after hours, if <br /> 32 necessary, to properly tool joints. <br /> 33 <br /> ' 34 3. Both vertical and horizontal joints shall be maintained uniform in spacing. <br /> 35 <br /> 36 4. Joints for CMU shall be 3/8-inch. Exterior and interior and vertical and horizontal joints <br /> 37 shall be concave rodded. <br /> 38 <br /> 39 F. Install all frames required to be set in masonry, set masonry tightly against frames, build <br /> 40 in all frame anchors, and fill frames with mortar. <br /> ' 41 <br /> az G. All masonry slots, chases, or openings required for the proper installation of the work of <br /> 43 other Sections shall be constructed as indicated on the Drawings or in accordance with <br /> 44 information furnished before the work is started at the points affected. No chase shall cut <br /> 45 into any wall constructed of hollow units after it is built, except as directed and approved <br /> 46 by the Engineer. <br /> 47 <br /> as H. Surfaces shall be brushed as work progresses and maintained as clean as it is practicable. <br /> 49 Unfinished work shall be raked back where possible, and toothed only where absolutely <br /> 50 necessary.
