Where pipelines to be installed under the contract cross <br /> certain designated streets or highways, as noted on the plans , <br /> the Contractor will only be permitted to open the trench <br /> one-half the width of the pavement at any one time so that ' <br /> one-way traffic can be maintained. <br /> Construction operations shall also be conducted in such a <br /> manner as to cause as little inconvenience as possible to <br /> abutting property owners . Water or dust palliative shall be <br /> applied if ordered by the Engineer for the alleviation or <br /> prevention of dust nuisance caused by the Contractor ' s ' <br /> operations . Convenient access to driveways , houses , and <br /> buildings along the line of work shall be maintained at least <br /> each morning and evening, and temporary approaches to crossings , <br /> or intersecting roads or streets shall be provided and kept in <br /> good condition. <br /> When traffic control signals are shut down as provided in ' <br /> Section 86-1. 05 of the State Specifications , the Contractor <br /> shall control traffic by use of flagmen , as directed by the <br /> Engineer , at those locations set forth in the Special <br /> Provisions. No STOP signs will be permitted at these locations. <br /> The Flagmen required for this operation shall be paid for as <br /> Force Account as set forth in Section G8 . 03 of these <br /> specifications. <br /> All of the foregoing requirements shall apply on weekends and <br /> holidays, if considered necessary by the Engineer . The Engineer <br /> may take action as necessary to provide for public convenience <br /> and charge the cost thereof to the Contractor if no <br /> representative of the Contractor is available to do same. <br /> G6. 09 Public Safety. The Contractor shall be responsible for the <br /> safety—of tra fic within the project limits and on the <br /> approaches to the project. The Contractor shall furnish, erect, <br /> and maintain such lights , barricades , flagmen , bridges, and <br /> other devices as are necessary to prevent accidents and avoid <br /> damage or injury to the public, and the Engineer may point out ' <br /> inadequacies of such measures. However , the Contractor shall <br /> not be relieved of his responsibility to protect the public by <br /> any approval given by the Engineer or by the Engineer ' s failure ' <br /> to point out any deficiency. <br /> No material or equipment shall be stored where it will <br /> interfere with the safe passage of public traffic, and at the <br /> end of each day ' s work and at other times when construction <br /> operations are suspended for any reason, the contractor shall <br /> remove all equipment and other obstructions from that portion <br /> of the roadway open for use by public traffic . Spillage <br /> resulting from hauling operations along or across any public <br /> traveled way shall be removed promptly. <br /> G-28 , <br />
