File No. 20-3239-03 KLEINFELDER
August 20, 1992
ITEMS C-1 AND C4:
"The intensity and extent of the existing and the proposed development on septic tanks within
and around the area;" (C-1). "The history of past uses in the project area to assess potential
problems;" (C4):
Reference is made to Plate I of this report which shows the location of the proposed
Thorton Ranch Estates site. The majority of the site contains rice, with exceptions being
a small pasture at the southwest corner of Edwards Avenue and Campbell Road and a few
well and/or old building pads. The majority of the area surrounding the site contains rice
and pasture with scattered residences.
On July 15, 1992 a representative of our firm visited five residences located off Edwards
Avenue and Campbell Road. In addition, on March 3, 1992, our representative visited
three residences located off Dove Road for a previous study. The approximate locations
of the residences visited are indicated on Plate 1. The purpose of the visits was to obtain
information on septic system use and to inquire about any problems known to exist with
this method of sewage disposal. We were able to question residents at seven of the eight
locations visited. Six of the residents reported no problem with their septic systems. The
resident at location 4 reported that when they moved in approximately two years ago their
toilets backed up. The leach lines were "repaired," the septic tank was pumped, and they
have had no problems since. The septic tank at location 2 was replaced approximately
five years ago because of old age. The majority of the residents indicated that their wells
produced "hard" water.
ITEM C-2:
"The suitability of the soil for development utilizing septic systems;"
On August 12, 1992, representatives of our firm drilled and set-up one approximate 3-
to 91h-foot deep, and one approximate 131h- to 141/2-foot
foot deep, one approximate 8-
deep percolation test hole on six of the nineteen proposed parcels at the approximate
locations indicated on Plate 1. The test holes were drilled with a truck-mounted drill rig
equipped with 6-inch diameter, continuous-flight augers. Perforated PVC pipe was
inserted into the test holes to prevent disturbance when adding water. The test holes were
filled with approximately 3 feet of relatively clean water the day before they were tested
and were left to soak overnight.
On August 13, 14, and 17, 1992, our representative performed the percolation tests. As
per San Joaquin County guidelines, the tests were performed for 30 minutes where water
remained in the holes after the overnight soaking and for four hours where the holes were
dry. The last 30 minutes of each test were used to calculate the percolation rates. In
Copyright 1992 KLeinfelder, Inc. Page 2 of 5
