deciduous nature of the trees would allow a more exposed view of the site during winter
months.
The site is also visible at a distance from portions of Mackville Road, to the
north.
Processing Facility
As with the quarry site, the processing facility lies in a lower portion of the
Mokelumne River "valley". The site has been used as a gravel processing site since 1956.
It is comprised of gravel and asphalt processing equipment and facilities which include
processing towers that reach approximately 50 feet in height, extended conveyor belts,
numerous sand and gravel mounds that extend to approximately 40 feet, and
miscellaneous equipment sheds and fuel storage tanks.
The site lies at the edge of the Mokelumne River corridor which is heavily
vegetated with oak and poplar trees. Viewed from the south side of the river, the
processing site is only minimally visible through the vegetation. The site is located in a
relatively isolated area which does not permit viewing from any frequently traveled
roadways. The site is visible, however, from the portion of Jahant Road as it passes the
site approximately 1/2 mile to the north, and from adjacent agricultural and pasture
lands.
3.9.2 Impacts
Quarry Site
This proposed quarry site would be taken out of agricultural production for a
minimum of 10 years. During this time excavation activities would proceed from the
southern end of the property to the north east-to-west segments. For each segment,
topsoil and overburden would be removed and mounded alongside the 100- to 200-foot-
wide strips from which aggregate would be extracted. Overburden would be in placed
in berm-shaped mounds rather than the mounds which have been used at previous
excavation sites.
101
