BUNKER TANK REMOVAL AND
SOIL SAMPLING PLAN
Background The bunker tank is believed to have been
originally installed as a fuel storage tank for
the Shewan-Jones Winery built in the early 1940' x .
Upon Lustre-Cal ' s occupancy , the tank was half
filled with water. Lustre-Cal has stored
spent 1 , 1 , 1 TCA , diacetone alcohol , and spent
etchants including Sodium Hydroxide and ammonium
biflouride.
The bunker ' s dimensions are approximately 18' x
26 ' x 11 ' . We have estimated that the bunker ex-
tends 4 ' under Lustre-Cal ' s offices . We propose
to sawcut the bunker in half at the base of the
office building ' s foundation . The tank portion
extending under the office would remain. The
buildingis foundation would likely be damaged if
the tank were to be pulled out from underneath.
The concrete portion of the tank and all exposed
piping will be removed and disposed of at an
appropriate disposal facility .
Concrete will be placed into the remaining tank
portion to fill the void under the building to
help prevent subsidence .
Soil Samples The backhoe used to remove the tank will be used
to collect soil for soil samples . The backhoe will
scope down below the tank into native soil . Three
soil samples will be taken from under the
longitudinal axis in this manner .
Please see Exhibit B for soil sample and analysis
details .
