GEOMATRIX
Mr. Don O. Culbertson
Chevron Pipe Line Company
5 July 1995
Page 2
Groundwater samples will be collected from the remaining 10 wells (MW-2, MW-5, MW-7, MW-9,
MW-10, MW-11, MW-12, MW-13, MW-14, and MW-17).
2. Uptake of PAHs by homegrown produce must be evaluated. Typically, the relevant root zone for
vegetables is the top twelve inches of soil. Therefore, samples should be taken in the top twelve
inches of the soil borings which would be relevant to the location of potential gardens.
The sampling plan will be revised to include an additional sampling interval at all sampling locations
on residential lots. One soil sample will be collected from 6 to 12 inches below ground surface and
analyzed for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)by EPA Method 8310. The interval from 0 to
6 inches below ground surface (bgs) will not be sampled to reduce the potential for interference from
PAH compounds that may have been introduced to the soil from other sources.
3. The soil from each sample on which a chemical analysis for PAHs is conducted should be
archived for future visual inspection. If significant risk is determined from vegetables grown in
PAH-contaminated soil, the archived soil samples should be inspected and the samples categorized
visually as contaminated or uncontaminated.
Soil samples collected'for PAH analysis from 6 to 12 inches bgs from the residential lots will be
archived. Standard field procedure is to observe soil samples for visual (staining) and olfactory (odor)
evidence as an indicator of residual locomotive fuel oil. These data will be recorded on the soil boring
logs. After laboratory results are received, they will be evaluated for a qualitative correlation between
the field soil conditions and the analytical results.
Please call if you have questions.
Sincerely yours,
GEOMATRIX CONSULTANTS, INC.
fill Jefferson
Project Geological Engineer
D...t:CSWP51\CFiEWO1 6579
