-7-
wells in Alden Park are A-zone wells . It also includes proce-
dures for cleaning equipment with solvents. This cleaning will
be done in our laboratories at Richmond; we will not bring sol-
vents to the Alden Park site.
Trees
In the summer of 1988, Chevron planted six trees in Alden Park to
improve the appearance of the park and address concerns that oil
contamination might have been affecting tree growth. Six trees
were planted in specially designed planters which prevented all
contact between oily dirt and the tree roots . Some of the trees
did not grow well . We concluded that some of the trees in the
park are drowning in standing water . We will verify this conclu-
sion and develop a plan to minimize the effects of the standing
water .
It will be necessary to measure the water level in the soil near
the trees . This will be accomplished using soil probes similar
to the ones installed near the bioventing well . With this infor-
mation we will be able to develop recommendations to minimize the
impacts of the standing water . We may also replace some of the
trees in the existing planters .
Removing Oil Seeps
In 1988 six active oil seeps were removed from the area sur-
rounding the park . Small seeps were removed by excavating the
soil and backfilling with clean soil. Seep collection vaults
were installed for larger seeps that might otherwise have
returned after a period of time. The efforts to remove oil seeps
were very successful . We expect that all of the large seeps have
been removed.
There is a small active seep in the sidewalk of Palm Circle east
of Alden Park . We will excavate this seep as part of this work
plan. We will excavate other seeps if they become active.
Excavation will be accomplished by an operator trained in the
excavation of oily dirt . The following procedure will be
followed:
. Appropriate permits will be obtained from the city of
Tracy.
. We will follow the general procedures described earlier .
. The affected area will be barricaded until all work is
completed.
. The seep will be excavated to a maximum depth of 4 feet .
During the excavation, the site will be monitored for
