File No. 20-3978-01.W 14 MK L F I N F F L D F R
January 6, 1997
SCOPE OF WORK
Permit and Workplan Submittal
Kleinfelder will collect soil samples from borings. The San Joaquin County Division of
Environmental Health (EHD) requires a workplan and boring permit application for all
sampling conducted for site assessment purposes. The proposed borings will require boring
permits. Kleinfelder will also prepare a health and safety plan for use in the field. The health
and safety plan will be included as part of the workplan.
Drilling of Borings and Soil Sample Collection
A total of eleven soil borings will be drilled in the vicinity of the solvent washdown area/auto
slab (Plate 2). Six exploratory soil borings will be advanced at the truck wash area (Plate 3).
The soil borings will be advanced using a truck-mounted drill rig equipped with 6-inch
diameter hollow stem augers. Soil samples will be collected beginning at a depth of 2 feet, at 5
feet and 10 feet below the bottom of the existing concrete or asphalt surface.
The borings will be drilled, logged, and sampled according to the protocol described in
Attachment B. The soil samples collected will be field screened using an organic vapor
detector as described in Attachment B, Section B-2.2. The borings will be advanced to a
maximum depth of 10 feet or until groundwater is encountered. Based upon previous
investigations at the Spreckels property, groundwater is anticipated to be at a depth of 20 to 27
feet below grade. Groundwater samples will not be collected
The soil borings will be closed in accordance with the protocol described in Attachment B.
Soil cuttings generated while drilling will be placed on and covered by visqueen and stored on
site pending chemical analysis. Water generated during steam cleaning of auger and/or
equipment will be left on site in labeled 55-gallon drums or discharged to the existing waste
water ponds. Analysis and disposal of drill culling and steam cleaning water is not included in
this proposal.
Hand Auger Soil Sampling
A total of 7 hand auger borings will be advanced at the historical auto shed, and the tote storage
area. Four hand auger borings will be advanced at the historical auto shed (Plate 4), and three
hand auger borings will be advanced at the tote storage area. (Plate 5). Soil samples will be
collected at the two and five feet below the bottom of the existing concrete or asphalt surface.
A clean hand auger will be used to advance each soil boring to the desired sampling depth. Soil
samples will be collected at depths of 0 to 6 inches, and two feet below grade. Soil samples are
obtained by driving a 2-inch diameter by 6-inch long brass tube into the soil using a slide
hammer. The brass tube is then removed from the boring and sealed with Teflon sheeting and
plastic end caps. The sample is then labeled, and placed in an iced cooler pending
transportation to the analytical laboratory under chain of custody protocols.
10-3978-01.W141207PE01I Page 2 of January 6, 1997
Copyright 1997, Kleinfelder, Inc.
