k9 KLEINFELDER
6.5. GENERAL SOIL SAMPLING AND HANDLING METHODOLOGY
Soil samples will be collected and analyzed in general accordance with Kleinfelder's
standard protocols for sampling and analyses for a PEA, which are included in
Appendix B. Samples will be handled in accordance with approved procedures
specified and generally as summarized below.
Due to limited access of proposed soil sample locations, Kleinfelder proposes soil
samples will be collected either by hand augering methods or by pushprobe soil
sampling techniques (Geoprobe). Concrete will be removed at each proposed sample
location using a professional concrete coring company. The minimum core diameter
will be 4-inches. Any additional surface debris will be removed with a clean hand trowel
(surface samples) or hand augering/pushprobing to the desired sampling depth for
deeper soil samples. The soil samples will be collected at the locations depicted on
Plates 3 and 4, although actual sampling locations will be dependent on access,
surface conditions, and potential interference with subsurface utilities.
Pushprobes will be advanced using a pneumatically driven steel probe. Soil samples
will be obtained by inserting a sample barrel, lined with acetate liners, into the probe.
The sample barrel will be lowered to the desired sampling depth and driven into the soil.
Hand auger soil samples will be collected by slide hammering a 2-inch diameter by 6-
inch long stainless steel tube into the soil at the desired sampling depths. During the
advancement of the borings, soil samples will be continuously collected for lithologic
classification and qualitative field screening will be conducted with a Photo Ionization
Detector (PID). The PID measures ionizable compounds in air in parts per million by
volume (ppmv). Lithologic classification will be based on the Unified Soil Classification
System (USCS).
The stainless steel hand auger, trowel, sampler, sample tubes and downhole
pushprobe equipment will be cleaned between locations with a Liquinox® (laboratory-
grade detergent) wash followed by a potable water and distilled water rinse. The
stainless steel tubes and or acetate liners used for collecting the samples will be sealed
following collection of the samples with Teflon° sheeting and tight-fitting plastic end
caps. After collection, the soil samples will be labeled, logged on a chain-of-custody
form, and immediately stored in an iced cooler pending transportation to the analytical
laboratory.
The soil samples will be transported under chain-of-custody control to Kleinfelder's
office and then transported by courier in a chilled container to California Laboratory
Services (CLS) of Rancho Cordova, California. The chain-of-custody form will be
signed by each individual who handles the samples, including the sampler and the
receiving employee at CLS. CLS is certified by the State of California to perform the
analyses requested. The samples will be analyzed on a standard 15-day turnaround
schedule for completion
57252.T02/ST05R9991DH:ly Page 18 of 29
©2005 Kleinfelder, Inc. September 1, 2005
