Working To Restore Nature
L. In July 1993, a subsurface investigation was conducted at the site by AquaGeosciences Inc. to
determine the extent of petroleum hydrocarbons present in soil and to determine if groundwater
had been impacted. This included drilling eight soil borings and collecting soil samples (Plate
3). Three of these borings were completed as shallow groundwater monitoring wells (MW-1,
MW-2 and MW-3). Analysis of soil samples indicated that the majority of petroleum
hydrocarbons in soil were present from about 10 feet below ground surface (bgs) to groundwater
L at a depth of approximately 29 feet bgs and within a radius of 35 feet from the former UST pit.
Laboratory analytical results are presented in Table 1.
L
In August 1993, wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-3 were monitored and sampled by
L AquaGeosciences Inc. Analytical results showed that MW-1 had no measurable concentrations
of petroleum hydrocarbons in the groundwater. Wells MW-2 and MW-3 contained detectable
i. levels of petroleum hydrocarbons.
As requested by SJCPHS, groundwater samples were collected by RESNA from three shallow
monitoring wells (MW-1, MW-2 and MW-3) in March and June 1994. Again, analytical results
L showed that MW-1 had no measurable concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons in the
groundwater. Wells MW-2 and MW-3 contained detectable levels of petroleum hydrocarbons.
L The locations of the monitoring wells are shown on Plate 2. Monitoring data and laboratory
analytical results are contained in Tables 2 and 3, respectively.
L
EXTENT OF TPHg IN SOIL AND GROUNDWATER
SJCPHS has requested that this workplan provide for additional monitoring wells to define the
extent of groundwater contamination and an additional soil boring to define the extent of soil
contamination at 30 feet below ground surface (bgs) to the north of the site. The following
paragraphs contains RESNA's recommendations based on previous work completed at the site.
LTo date, three quarters of groundwater monitoring have been completed. Results indicate that
t the groundwater flow direction has been to the southeast (two quarters) and to the east-northeast
t J
V
150078\REPORTS\WP-0890.FNL 2
V
