21 April 1997
AGE-NC Project No. 97-0321
3.3. EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
All sampling tools and brass sleeves used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean
water after washing with a solution of Alconox.
3.4. LABORATORY ANALYSIS
Selected soil samples will be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as diesel (TPH-d)
and volatile aromatics (benzene. toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes: BTE&X) in accordance with
EPA methods 8015m and 8020.
Laboratory reports of soil sample analyses, testing methods, laboratory quality assurance/quality
control (QA/QC) reports. and sample chain-of-custody documentation will be presentt.d in a report
with the findings and recommendations.
4.0 PROCEDURES
4.1 RE-EXCAVATION OF FORMER UST AREA
For the excavation of impacted soil in the area of the former UST's, the following procedures will
be performed:
I. Prepare a site health and safety plan in accordance with occupational safety and Health
Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities (Prepared by National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, 1985).
2. Notify the PHS-EI-ID 72 hours prior to commencement of any work.
3. Excavate the contaminated soil using an excavator. We anticipate the excavation will be
enlarged by approximately 5 to 10 feet in each direction. Approximately 50 to 100 cubic
yards of soil will be excavated.
4_ As excavation proceeds, monitor excavated soil for the presence of volatile organics using
a photo-ionization detector (PID). Soil will be segregated into "clean" stockpiles and
"impacted" stockpiles based upon PID measurements.
5. Stockpile the excavated soil on plastic sheeting, pending analytical results. Impacted soil will
be stockpiled adjacent to the excavation. The clean soil will be used to backfill the
excavation upon completion of digging.
