Ask—
Fire Fighting Ta,-tics
Oily Haste 'rank
- ' z•his tank _contains oily wastes , hazardous materials, and
water in s.clution mixtures and separated into layers. The '
tank should have enough frer-board to allow for spreading a
foam layer, tonging mist, or water spray to be applied to
the surface. without danager of an overflow. A secondary
wall will contain overflow in the event flaming materials or
wastes escape the tank structure. These containment fea-
tures allow for the use of suppression agents, and fires
should be left to the responding fire department team with
high performance foam systems.
Personnel should stay upwind of the fire and avoid an
unnecessary exposure to smoke or vapors.
Drum Storage Facility
The principal fire danger associated with the drum storage
facility is the potential for the fire to spread to the roof
structure or stored poles. The semi-enclosed site restricts
fire access and would tend to concentrate smoke and fumes.
In the event of fire in this area, fire. crews should take
the following precautions:
o Use a water spray to cool drums that are near the
fire but not actually _burning. This will reduce . ...
the danger of rupturing a -drum and spreading
combustible materials.
- o Do not enter the drum storage_ area without SCBA's
as toxic vapors and poisonous smoke may be trapped
under the roof structure.
o Use CO foam to suppress a fire if only a few
drums aYe burning.
o Use water on the roof structure to extinguish
fires there or to retard the spreading of the
fire.
After a fire has occurred at each type of facility, an
inspection of damage and determination of the aerial extent
of contamination must be made by the Environmental Coordina-
tor in consultation with the representatiAf,4s of the DOHS and
RWQCB. Cleanup activities would be employed to decontami- .
nate areas affected by• the fire as necessary.
SFR18/053
NIP
