A risk assessment may include but not be
Sacramento,CA limited to Risk-Based-Corrective-Action (RBCA) analysis since this will identify any
95814
(916)227-4322 possible receptors and/or pathways present at the specified sites. Risk assessment is a
FAX(916)227-4530 cost-effective way to decide if remediation is necessary or what levels of cleanup are
World Wide Web: essential to minimize risk to human health and other exposed receptors.
httpWwww_swrcb.ca.
gov/-cwphome/
fandhome.htm An example of cost effectiveness is as follows: A RBCA analysis for a specific site will
usually cost $3,000 to $7,000 after the site plume has been thoroughly defined and
monitoring wells installed. Nevertheless a Soil Vapor Extraction system will typically
cost the State for one year of operation approximately $125,000. If the risk analysis
concludes the residual contamination poses no threat to human health, drinking water
wells or other pathways the State has essentially saved over S 100,000 by avoiding
unnecessary remediation to the site. However, if the RBCA analysis concludes there is a
very real risk to sensitive receptors then cleanup and remediation costs can be fully
justified.
Please note the risk analysis process is a new concept to many people and we expect
prices and certain parameters to fluctuate depending on site conditions. However this
process will become more streamlined as more consultants learn how to do RBCA's and
other risk assessments.
Furthermore all work must be directed and approved by you, the local oversight agency
to be eligible for full reimbursement.
Please call me at the above number for assistance.
Sincerely,
Ismael Jacobo
State Water Resourc se Control Engineer
a Recycled Paper Our mission is to preserve and enhance the quality of California's traler resources, and
ensure their proper allocation:and of ciext use for the benef t of present and future generations.
