1
52 Aeration and Disposal of Stockpiled Soil
Disposal options for each soil stockpile were evaluated by Roux and ARCO following receipt
of laboratory analytical data. The laboratory analytical data for the soil stockpiles was provided
to the Browning Ferris Industries Class III landfill in Livermore, California (BFI) Following
approval from BFT, soil stockpiles CS 1, CS2, CS3, CS6, CS 14, and CS 15 were removed from
the Site beginning on August 3, 1993, by Dillard Trucking of Byron, California (Dillard) and
transported to the BFI Class III landfill.
The remaining soil stockpiles were not initially accepted for disposal by BFI To reduce the
concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons, these soil stockpiles were aerated at the Site following
procedures outlined by the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District (APCD)
Aeration of the soil began on August 4, 1993, and was accomplished by spreading the soil out
in a thin layer and repeatedly turning the soil over to promote evaporation of volatile
'
hydrocarbons. After one to two days of aeration the sostockpiles were re-sampled A total
of five composite samples (CAI through CAS) were collected from each 100 cu yds. of aerated
soil and analyzed in the same manner as the pre-aeration soil stockpiles. The laboratory
analytical data for the aerated stockpile samples is included on Table 2. Laboratory analytical
reports and Chain-of-Custody documentation forms are presented in Appendix B
1
The laboratory analytical data for the aerated soil stockpiles was provided to BFI Following
approval from BFI, the aerated soil stockpiles were removed from the Site by Dillard and
transported to the BFI Class III landfill. Removal of the soil from the Site was completed on
September 10, 1993. A total of about 1,000 cu yds of soil was transported from the Site to
the BFI landfill. Disposal documentation for all soil removed from the Site is included in
Appendix C
1
7 Doc #A 759W01 17
1
