This is a large area of sloughs, islands, and <br /> channels that were formed by the meanderings of the Mokelumne, <br /> San Joaquin, & Calaveras rivers . The Stockton deep water channel <br /> is to the northwest, and Mormon slough is 1/2 mile to the north. <br /> Surface drainage is to the west, at about 10 " per mile, with very <br /> low relief The elevation at the site is approximately 121 msl <br /> datum Refer to PLATE II for a portion of a USGS topographic map <br /> which gives more information concerning the area. <br /> SOIL TYPES <br /> According to a 1952 University of California publication, soils <br /> in the area consist primarily of Stockton adobe clay, which is <br /> usually brown to dark brown in color, calcareous, with hardpan <br /> subsoil layers undelain with unconsolidated material It is <br /> derived from older floodplain & terrace deposits, with a Storie <br /> index of 28 PLATE III is a portion of a soils map from that <br />• publication. <br /> 2 <br />
