26 October 2000
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0466
' proposed advancement of one soil boring to 20 feet bsg in each of the leach field areas and three
hand auger borings to 5 feet bsg in the western ditch for soil sample col ection.
Due to field conditions, only two soil borings were advanced deeper than 20 feet bsg.Additionally,
only one boring, in the north leach field area, was advanced to ground ater. Continuous refusal
prevented additional soil borings from being advanced to proposed depths. Eight soil samples and
' one grab ground water sample were collected for laboratory analysis.
Only one hand auger boring was advanced to proposed depth, due to ref i al.Five soil samples were
collected from the west ditch for laboratory analysis. Boring locations are illustrated on Figures 3
and 4.
2.0. PROCEDURES
' On 22 June 2000,as part of site assessment activities, one soil probe bo g and three shallow hand
auger borings were advanced in the western ditch area and five soil pro 3e borings were advanced
in the septic tank/leach field area. As the leach field area for the mainte iance building septic tank
could not be identified, soil probe borings were advanced in three direci ions around the tank. Soil
samples were collected from each boring and one grab ground water sam le was collected from the
' leach field area for laboratory analysis. The fieldwork was conducted as utlined in the PHS-EHD-
approved work plan dated 02 June 2000.
' 2.1. DRILLING ACTIVITIES
Soil probe borings DP1 and LPI through LP5 were advanced utilizing a van-mounted Geoprobe
5400 equipped with 1.125-inch diameter probe rods with an attached 2.15-inch diameter soil
sampler, using"direct push"technology.Soil probe boring DP 1 was advanced just south ofthe south
' end of the ditch to a depth of 15 feet bsg; refusal at this depth prevented further advancement. LPl
through LP5 were advanced to depths ranging from 12 to 40 feet bsg;refusal in all borings but LP3
and LP4 prevented advancement to ground water.
Hand auger borings were collected progressively northward along the ditch bottom to the south end
of the former coverplant and were advanced using a 3-inch diameter hand auger.Hand augerborings
' (DS 1 through DS4)were advanced vertically to depths ranging from 2 tc 5 feet bsg. Sample DS 1-2
was collected in the ditch bottom at the south end of the ditch, refusal jus t below the sampling point
at 2 feet bsg prevented collecting deeper samples.
1
SII Advanced GmEnvironmental,Inc.
1
