3.3 Excavation Description
Approximately 25 cubic yards of soil were removed from the
' excavation using a backhoe. The soil was stockpiled adjacent to the
excavation. The final dimensions of the excavation were
approximately 10 feet by 9 feet by 9 feet.
' When excavation was terminated, light-brown to brown silty sand and
sandy silt were exposed in the walls of the excavation. Minor
' staining was present in the excavation and a slight diesel/oil odor
was noticed.
' 4.0 COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS OF SOIL SAMPLES
4. 1 Sample Collection
Two (2) soil samples were collected by a geologist from GeoAudit at
the time of removal, under the direction of Ms. Carol Oz of the San
' Joaquin County Public Health Services - Environmental Health
Division (PHS/EHD) . One sample was collected from four feet below
the floor of the excavation, and one sample was collected from the
stockpiled soil. Samples were collected from the backhoe bucket and
the stockpiled soil using a metric soil sampler loaded with two
clean 2 x 3-inch brass tubes. The ends of the tubes were covered
with sheets of aluminum foil, capped, and wrapped with duct tape.
' Samples were labeled, logged on a chain of custody and placed on
ice pending transport to WEST laboratories in Davis, California.
' 4.1 Sample Analysis
The samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH as
gasoline, diesel, and motor oil) , BTE&X, chlorinated hydrocarbons,
PCB's and 5 LUFT metals. The laboratory report and chain of custody
are presented in Appendix A.
5. 0 FINDINGS
' 5.1 Tank Samples
Ethylbenzene and xylene were detected in sample T5-C at
concentrations of 0. 18 mg/kg and 2 . 0 mg/kg (parts per million)
' respectively. TPH as gasoline, diesel and motor oil were detected
at concentrations of 65 mg/kg, 350 mg/kg and 16, 000 mg/kg,
respectively (Table 1) .
' Cadmium, chromium, lead, zinc and nickel were detected at
concentrations of 0. 65 mg/kg, 62 mg/kg, 43 mg/kg, 77 mg/kg and 47
mg/kg, respectively (Table 2) . No benzene, toluene, PCB' s or
halogenated volatile organics were detected in this sample.
I
2
