i
 Kennedy/Jenks/Chilton
•- Mr. Charles Whitworth
Cal-Farm Supply
1 14 July 1989
Page 8
calculated. This ratio was then multiplied by the LD50 of the pesticide for
which the soil criteria was calculated.
Subsurface Soil and Groundwater Samples
1
TPH and Purgeable Aromatics- Petroleum hydrocarbons and purgeable aromatics
(BXTE) were detected only in soils from borings B-1 and MW-1 and groundwater
F from monitoring well MW-1 . Boring B-1 and monitoring well MW-1 are located
near the underground storage tank. Both gasoline and diesel hydrocarbons were
detected in the groundwater samples from MW-1. In addition, constituents of
gasoline (BXTE) were detected in water samples from this well TPH and BXTE
were not detected in groundwater or soil samples collected from the other
monitoring wells (MW-2, MW-3, MW-4) during this investigation. Benzene in
water from MW-1 was the only constituent which exceeded drinking water
standards.
A soil sample collected from the 20.0- to 20.5-foot depth interval in boring
B-1 contained TPH as diesel (68 mg/Kg), benzene (44 ug/Kg) , toluene (32
ug/Kg) , ethylbenzene (64 ug/Kg) , and xylenes at (312 ug/Kg) . A soil sample
collected from the 15 5- to 16.0-foot interval in borings MW-1 contained TPH
as diesel (10 mg/Kg) , benzene (4 ug/Kg) , and toluene (3 ug/Kg) . Xylenes and
other purgeable aromatics were not detected above method detection limits in
this sample.
With the exception of toluene, purgeable aromatics were not detected in soil
samples from B-2, MW-2, MW-3, and MW-4. Toluene was detected in soil samples
from all of the borings at concentrations ranging from 4 ug/Kg to 32 ug/Kg
However, these concentrations could be attributed to laboratory artifacts.
Chlorinated benzenes were not detected in any water or soil samples analyzed.
Nitrate: Low concentrations of nitrate were detected in soil and groundwater
samples collected from the soil borings and monitoring wells. However, only
one water sample (from MW-2) contained nitrate at concentrations exceeding EPA
drinking water standards. Nitrate concentrations in groundwater samples
collected at the site ranged from 0.09 mg/L as nitrogen (N) in the
reconnaissance groundwater sample collected from boring B-2 to 29 mg/L as
nitrogen in the groundwater sample collected from well MW-2. This well is
located along the perimeter of the fenced area with a field upgradient.
Nitrate concentrations in soil samples analyzed from the borings ranged from
3.0 mg/Kg to 58 mg/Kg as nitrogen
l
