• GErZ
GENESIS ENGINEERING 8 REDEVELOPMENT
3.0 HAZARD ASSESSMENT AND CONTROL MEASURES
3.1 Human Exposure Pathways
Potentially impacted soil near the Site is the primary media of concern for personnel exposure
during implementation of field activities. The potential exposure pathways for constituents of
concern include dermal contact and incidental ingestion during the field activities. Based on
historical data at and near the Site, inhalation of vapors is not considered to be an exposure
pathway during the field activities. There is an overall potential for inhalation of dust because
the proposed boring locations are not paved. However, direct push and hand auger drilling
procedures will be utilized to advance the exploratory boreholes. The generation of dust using
direct push or hand auger drilling technology is minimal.
Dermal contact and incidental ingestion pathways will be minimized through a vigilant personal
hygiene program and the use of respiratory and Personal Protective Equipment("PPE")when
thresholds are exceeded. Air monitoring in the breathing zone will be performed to confirm that
ambient VOC concentrations are below prescribed action levels (Section 4.0). Field personnel
. are required to control exposure primarily through the use of safe work practices and PPE.
3.2 Chemical Hazards
The primary constituents of concern that are anticipated to be in the soils near the Site include:
• Inorganic salts, such as potassium, sodium, chloride, and sulfate
The Permissible Exposure Limits (TEL") are defined as the time-weighted average
concentrations for a nominal eight-hour work day and a 40-hour work week,to which nearly all
workers may be repeatedly exposed without adverse effect(Title 8 CCR 5155). The
Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health ("IDLH") criteria are defined as the maximum level
from which a person could escape within 30 minutes without loss of life or irreversible health
effects (NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services). There is no PEL or IDLH for the inorganic salts anticipated during this project.
3.3 Physical Hazards
The physical hazards associated with the field activities likely present a greater risk of injury
than the constituents of concern in soil at the Site. Activities within the scope of this Project
shall comply with California and Federal OSHA construction safety standards.
•
Health and Safety Plan 4 of 15
DePaoli Property
February 2012
