6.0 ALTERNATIVES
Air Quality
The construction impacts of this alternative would be somewhat less than that of the proposed project.
Since trip generation for the site would be reduced somewhat, the regional air quality impacts of this
alternative would also be less.
Water Resources
The elimination of the golf course would substantially reduce the water demand. Water trapped for
storage from Jahant Slough would be adequate to meet the demands of the project except during the most
severe droughts. Since surface water impoundments would meet the project demands, the need for make-
up water from groundwater pumping or summer diversions from the Mokelumne River would be
eliminated, reducing impacts on these resources. Impacts to the flood storage and flood dynamics would
be similar to the those discussed above for the proposed project. The project would still create building
pads, roads, canals and lakes that affect the floodplain storage and flood elevation on the site. Nitrate
loading to groundwater would be reduced by about 20 percent in comparison with the proposed project.
Erosion hazards associated with the major earth moving to enlarge the lakes would still exist; but at a
slightly reduced impact level because of the elimination of golf course grading work.
Biological Resources
The proposed location of the 26 homesites immediately adjacent to the Tracy Lakes shoreline and on the
edge of Brovelli Woods would destroy essential Swainson's hawk foraging habitat. Human presence and
activities would deter wildlife use of both habitats. These impacts are similar to those of the proposed
project with the exception that golfing activities within Brovelli Woods would be eliminated.
Public Services
The demand for public services would be the same as with the proposed project.
Cultural Resources
Impacts associated with this alternative are similar to the proposed project relative to the location of lots
2, 3, 4, 11, 12, 13, 19, -20, and 21, ^. portions of lots 5, 14, 21 and 22, and roadway alignments
in the areas of high archaeological sensitivity. Without the golf course, the applicant would have greater
flexibility in relocating house sites away from significant cultural resources.
6.3 ELIMINATION OF THE HAUL ROUTE
This alternative assumes elimination of the haul route and ultimately the project's southerly access, and
no excavation of Tracy Lakes. Impacts to cultural and biological resources would be reduced.
6-4
