Peak & Associates will complete the following tasks for the "Setting" section:
■ review pertinent literature and begin preparing general background sections on
the prehistory, history, and ethnology of the area;
■ collect sufficient data (but do not conduct in-depth research) to identify research
topics and provide a framework for later evaluation of site significance;
■ review historical maps, field notes, and secondary sources (e.g., county histories)
for information or potential locations of historic period sites and features in the
project area;
■ when the alignment for the haul route(s) is selected, request a supplemental
records search from the North Central California Information Center of the
California Archaeological Inventory;
■ undertake the field study by two two-person teams traversing the project area in
15-meter-wide transects to locate all prehistoric and historic cultural resources;
■ plot the approximate locations of the sites on large-scale topographic maps;
■ assign each site, regardless of whether the site has been previously recorded, a
temporary site number;
■ complete a standard site survey form for each site;
■ prepare a complete photographic record of each site recording environmental
setting, artifactual material, and any site disturbance;
■ prepare detailed site sketch maps of each site, using a Brunton or Silva compass,
30-meter tapes, and a transit and stadia rod, to show site perimeters, distinctive
topographic features, associated cultural features (e.g., housepits), and locations
of unique or time-sensitive artifacts;
■ prepare detailed profile plans of housepits;
■ determine site boundaries by visual inspection for extent of artifact distribution
or,in heavily vegetated or disturbed areas,by using trowels to clear small patches
for visibility;
■ correlate previously assigned site numbers to the sites recorded during the field
surveys;
■ prepare a comprehensive report and background overviews for environment,
archeology, ethnography, and historic period to be included with the survey
results; and
III-20
