Investigates water supply and other wetland management issues and opportunities. Evaluated potential new water sources and wetlands management enhancement possibilities at two major private wetland areas in California's San Joaquin Valley: the Grasslands area and Kern-Tulare Basin. Assessed historical and current conditions, waterfowl use, water needs, water supply options, and impacts of contaminated agricultural drainwater on waterfowl and other wildlife. Also evaluated potential assistance programs. Conducted owner surveys to determine economic values of wetlands, and developed management recommendations to protect habitat values. Wildlife Impact Assessment and Mitigation Planning for Development. Project manager and wildlife task leader. Assesses wildlife population and habitat impacts for residential and industrial development projects in the Central Valley, Sierra Nevada foothills,San Francisco Bay Area,coastal lands, and other areas of California. Analyzed major issues pertaining to endan- gered species, deer winter range, wetlands, and riparian and oak woodlands. Prepared a user's guide for the California Department of Fish and Game's Wildlife Habitat Relationships program. The program included a computer- ized database and series of reference books. Natural Resource Management Planning. Prepares wildlife and other biological resource sections of natural resource management plans. Projects included plans to enhance habitats for waterfowl, riparian wildlife, and threatened and endangered species for the 2,400-acre Sacramento County Regional Sanitation District's buffer lands,and development of a management plan for livestock grazing and wildlife resources for the Los Vaqueros Reservoir. Also prepared and contributed to numerous project mitigation plans. Natural Resource Management Policy and Economics. Conducts policy and economic analyses of wildlife issues in natural resource management. Assessed the status of natural diversity in California and policy needs to improve protection efforts for The Nature Conservancy, the adequacy of wildlife protection on private timberlands under the California Forest Practice Rules for the California Department of Forestry, and public economic benefits of alternative programs to reduce wildlife impacts of contaminated agricultural drainage water in California's San Joaquin Valley. Reviewed streambank management practices for forestry, livestock grazing, and recreation for use in developing management objectives and best management practices for Pacific Gas and Electric Company lands.
