recommendations about the mixed oak forest.
Assumptions
1. Limited evidence suggests that relatively rare, major flood events with
significant overbank flow velocity are a dominant mechanism in mixed oak
forest regeneration.
2. Flow regulation has caused a significant shift in the occurrence of these
events to the point where the forest may be incapable of self-regeneration.
3. It is doubtful that artificial flooding can recreate the requisite velocities and
sediment concentrations necessary to mimic the processes associated with major
flood events.
6. From the perspective of maintaining long-term viability of the forest, active
but infrequent management is necessary to promote regeneration.
Recommendations
Two management recommendations were developed from Options 1 and 3.
1. Stand age analysis with an evaluation of growth rates during known flood
events should be undertaken to create baseline data for a forest management
plan.
2. On site field tests of forest regeneration techniques should be implemented.
In particular the effects of inundation and soil disturbance,to mimic flood
activities should be tested.
Benefit to Wildlife
The formerly forested site that is slated for restoration will, in time support those species
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
171
