This System is
comprised of private and public landowners and managers who have
registered their lands as "cooperative conservation areas" . We are
presently working with cooperators in 47 states and eighteen
additional countries.
The System is divided into four basic land categories:
individually owned land, corporate and business land, school land, C5
and golf course land. Our ultimate goal within each land category
is to inform land mangers about wildlife and environmental
considerations and motivate each manager to act in ways that will
improve biodiversity and environmental quality.
' In that regard, we offer the following comments concerning the
above referenced project based upon: our review of the project
Management Plan, the Draft Environmental Impact Report, and a visit
to the proposed development site.
The biological importance of the site is generally agreed upon
by everyone involved. The site is unique for many reasons. It is C6
the last portion of historic riparian woodlands in the immediate
vicinity. It is known to harbor several species of wildlife that
are considered among the more rare of the state of California.
Likewise there are several types of habitats on the site, ranging
from river based to woodland, vernal pools to savannah.
It is also important to note that decisions have been made
over the years that have no doubt converted hundreds, if not C7
thousands, of acres of similar habitat surrounding the site in
question to agricultural operations.
III-49
