KLEINFELDER
y File No. 20-2245-29.E01
November 1, 1996
SAMPLING PROCEDURES
Prior to collecting each soil sample, the sample location was be sprayed with a
fine mist of distilled water from a spray bottle to limit the release of dust particles
to the air. Surface vegetation and approximately 0.5 to 1.0 inches of soil was
removed with a decontaminated hand trowel or shovel. (The hand trowel or
shovel will be washed with LiquinoxTM solution and rinsed with distilled water
prior to collecting each sample). After the vegetation and top 0.5 to 1.0 inches of
OA
soil was removed, the sample location was sprayed again with distilled water and
a soil sample was collected.
U
The soil samples were placed into sample containers for selected analysis. The
sample container was sealed, labeled, and logged on a chain-of-custody record.
LABORATORY ANALYSIS
Samples were submitted under chain-of-custody to Forensic Analytical of
Hayward, California, which is certified by the State of California to perform the
analysis. Samples were analyzed for asbestos by Transmission Electron
Microscopy (TEM). The TEM analyses was be performed in accordance with
EPA Method 600/R-93-116. The analytical results are presented in percentage
ranges of asbestos fibers. The detection limit of the analysis is approximately
0.0001%.
Background Soil Samples
Each of the ten background soil samples, BG-Kl through BG-K10 were <0.0001
asbestos weight percent. BG-K6 (See Plate 2) did detect chrysotile asbestos at
<0.0001%. The remaining nine background samples were non-detect for asbestos
types.
Former Stockpile Confirmed Soil Samples
A total of 14 confirmation samples were collected in the three former work areas.
The four soil samples collected in Work Area #1 (1-K1 through 1-K4) were all
non-detect (<0.0001 asbestos weight percent).
Seven of the soil samples collected in Work Area #2 (See Plate 4) were
all non
detect (<0.0001 asbestos weight percent). Concentrations of chrysotitle asbestos
were detected at 0.0001 weight percent in soil sample 2-K2.
