indicator will be calibrated for methane, and work at eh site will cease if concentration reach 20 percent
or higher of the lower explosive limit for methane (actual concentration of 1 percent or greater). In
addition to monitoring for flammable, a photoionization detector (PID) will be used to monitor for BETX.
If the PID reading consistently exceeds 10 parts per million (ppm) in the work area, then work will cease.
Level C PPE will be donned prior to continuing work at the site. Actions will then be taken to allow
either natural ventilation or forced ventilation to dissipate the concentration until safe working conditions
once again exist.
Soil Vapor Extraction System
Monitoring for flammable concentration of methane gas will be conducted continuously using a
combustible gas indicator during the installation for the soil vapor probes. The combustible gas meter will
be calibrated for methane, and walk at the site will cease if concentration reach 20 percent or higher of
the lower explosive limit for methane (actual concentration of 1 percent or greater).
This will be only monitoring required since no contamination will be present at eh soil surface.
MEDICAL SURVEILLANCE REQUIREMENTS
Medical surveillance is conducted as a routine program which meets the requirements of 29 CFR
1910.120 (f). There will not be any special medical tests or examinations required for staff involved in
their project.
There is potential for field activities to have an impact on neighboring business in the vicinity of Chevron
Station. Prior to the start of field work and periodically during field work, these businesses will be
briefed on the project and its progress. Emergency response coordination will be accomplished through
the local fire district.
Due to variability in wind direction at this site, the esckusin zone will vary as dictated by wind
conditions. During off-site activity, on or near streets, traffic control will be utilized as described int eh
"Work Area Traffic Control Handbook" published by building News, Inc. Figure C-1 shows a layout of
the site with planned work areas highlighted.
The nearest emergency medical assistance is St. Pomonics Hospital located at 1777 W. Yosemite Avenue,
Manteca, Ca, telephone number (209) 823-0123. Doctor's Hospital of Modesto located at 1441 Florida
Avenue, (209) 578-1211.
Work Practices
Safe work practices to be employed during the entire progress of field work are as follows:
1. Set up, assemble, and check out all equipment for integrity and proper function before entering
the restricted work area and prior to starting work activities.
2. Do not use faulty or suspect equipment.
3. Use only new and intact protective clothing. Change the suit, gloves, etc. if they tear.
