The majority of the
site has supported orchards for more than 100 years. A number of residences and out-buildings
are situated within the central portion of the site along an access road that traverses the property.
Our firm prepared a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment of the property dated October 5,
2005. ' Our study revealed a number of conditions warranting further investigation, including:
the potential for pesticide contamination (including lead and arsenic from potential past
application of lead-arsenate) within the orchard areas and near outbuildings; the potential for
petroleum hydrocarbon and metals contamination to surface soils near the buildings; and, the
potential for petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in the vicinity of a former 1,000-gallon
underground gasoline storage tank that was removed in 1989. Our firm performed a number of
direct-push borings late 2005 and early 2006 to evaluate the former underground storage tank
area; the results of the tank area investigation are presented under separate cover.
SAMPLING ACTIVITIES
General
All sampling activities were performed by a Professional Geologist from our office. The
locations of the soil samples are shown on Plates 2 through 6. Soils samples were collected by
v hand using either a steel trowel or sampling augur. The near-surface soils encountered
generally consisted of brown silty fine sands and sandy silts; no visual or olfactory evidence of
significant contamination was observed at the sampled locations. The sampling equipment was
decontaminated prior to use and between sampling events in order to minimize the chance of
cross-contamination. A new pair of disposable nitrile gloves was worn during and between soil
sampling activities. Soil samples were collected in either laboratory-provided four-ounce glass
jars or six-inch brass sleeves that were sealed with Teflon tape and plastic end caps. All samples
were given discrete sample numbers, placed on ice, and transported with chain-of-custody
documentation to a State-certified laboratory for analysis. Labeled wooden lath or plastic
tassels were set at each sampling location so that the locations could be identified at a later date
if necessary.
October 2005 Soil Sampling
Pursuant to the recommendations of our referenced Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, our
firm collected "screening" soil samples on October 17, 2005. Eight surface soil samples were
collected at locations S1 through S8 within the orchard areas (see Plate 2). Four surface soil
samples were collected at locations S9 through S12 within the area of the woodbarn located on
the northerly most portion of the property (see Plate 3). Four surface soil samples were
collected at locations S13 through S16 within the area of the workshop (see Plate 4). One
surface soil sample was collected at location S17 near a detached garage associated with the
' Raney Geotechnical, Inc., "Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, Cabral Property, APNs 115-230-06, and-07,
4202 through 4208 Sutter Street,Stockton,California";October 5,2005,Raney Reference No. 1828-092.
