I All-Terrain Vehicle
8 Roll-off Bins (20 yard)
3 Bales of 8"X 10' Sorbent Boom
4 Bales of Sorbent Pads
03/14/2018 —Hammond Canyon, Inc. experienced a release of an estimated 20 bbls of crude oil
from tanks located on a non-operational lease as reported by the land owner. This incident took
place in Hammond Canyon at Canada Larga, Ventura, CA. Two 250 barrel crude oil storage
tanks leaked from the "gauge hatch", apparently due to over pressurization from a failed block
valve. The product breached the dirt secondary containment berms through holes in the berms
caused by rodents. The product traveled South down grade in a small streambed with the
assistance of water from recent rain fall. The oil-water mix traveled approximately 800 feet,
where it "pooled up". At this location, Patriot Environmental staged a vacuum truck to recover
the contaminated water. Following additional reconnaissance, minor contamination was also
found on the banks in various locations an additional 600 feet beyond the initial pooling. Due to
the amount of rain fall predicted shortly in the weather forecast, Patriot Environmental then went
downstream, constructed an underflow dam and placed sorbent booms in various locations near
bridges in an effort to reduce the potential spread of contamination. An additional vacuum truck
removed fluids from the overflowing tanks to create supplementary containment space. Clean up
consisted of contaminated soil removal and a deluge flush with cold water followed by the oil-
water mx recovery with vacuum trucks. Follow-up activities included interface with regulatory
agencies, waste management, transportation and disposal. Agencies involved were CA DFW-
OSPR (OES# 18-1670), Ventura County Department of Environmental Health, Ventura County
Sherriff's Office of Emergency Services, and the Ventura County Fire Department.
Resources:
Personnel: 2 Project Managers
3 Field Supervisors
3 Site Foremen
33 Field Technicians
3 Equipment Operators
Equipment: 6 Response Trucks
2 Gear Trucks
2 Crew Vans
2 Response Trailer
1 70-bbl Vacuum Truck
1 120-bbl Vacuum Tanker with Tractor
1 Double Roll-off Bin Trailer with Tractor
1 4k Water Truck
2 Roll-off bins (20-yard)
121,000 Gallon Storage Tank
1 All-Terrain Vehicle
175 Bales of Sorbent Pads
55 Bales of 8"X 10' Sorbent Boom
