a4
• General Safety Hazards
Below, each of the foregoing hazards are discussed. Even though the concentrations of
petroleum hydrocarbons, including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes are
expected to be low, EI personnel will plan for their presence in the working environment
during all phases of work on this site.
i
4.1 Chemical Hazards
Toxic substances can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion or skin absorption.
They can enter by more than one route, cause damage at the point of entry and cause
organ damage after being metabolized. The most likely toxic substances to be
encountered at the R & L site are used oil, diesel and gasoline. These are all
hydrocarbons and as such present flammability hazards. In addition, contaminants
and/or components present additional hazards. The following table lists gasoline and
gasoline components and their respective permissible exposure levels (PEL).
Exposures at R & L for the projected work are not expected to exceed the PELs. i
ag Xf35Ulf #IIIT $i ,
aP1=
CtJNIR ?UNE3 a Lg ,
,S^ i .
