3.0 Field Activities <br /> 3.1 Summary of Field Activities <br /> Remedial activities at the site were conducted between October 18 and December 2, 2004. <br /> The general chronology of field activities completed at this site includes: <br /> • Well abandonment and soil sampling for disposal pre-acceptance—October 11 and <br /> November 2,2004 <br /> • Mobilization—October 18,2004 <br /> • Demolition—October 18 to October 25,2004 <br /> • Northern perimeter sample collection — October 22,2004 <br /> • Soil excavation—October 25 to November 8,2004 <br /> • Backfill and site restoration—November 4,2004 to November 23,2004 <br /> • Demobilization—December 2,2004 <br /> All activities at the site were conducted in accordance with a site-specific health and safety <br /> plan. Site personnel were informed of protocols during daily pre-construction safety <br /> briefings.Photographs were taken during field activities.Selected photographs are <br /> presented in Appendix A. <br /> Prior to implementation of remedial action,the appropriate permits were obtained from the <br /> regulating government agencies. An excavation permit was obtained from San Joaquin <br /> County Environmental Health Department(Appendix B). Prior to soil removal work,a <br /> letter of notification of excavation activities was sent to the California Occupational Safety <br /> and Health Administration. In addition,Underground Service Alert was notified 48 hours <br /> prior to field activities. <br /> During demolition,inactive underground gas lines were excavated, disposed of with the <br /> soil, and transported under manifest to Forward Landfill in Manteca as a Class II non- <br /> hazardous waste (Figure 2). <br /> 3.2 Sampling for Disposal Pre-acceptance <br /> On October 11,2004 two discrete soil samples were collected for pre-disposal <br /> characterization purposes.Samples were collected from areas containing the highest <br /> petroleum hydrocarbons in soil,based on prior investigation results (CH2M HILL 1998, <br /> 2002).Soil samples 20-MW-2-5-10-11-04 and 20-MW-2-10-10-11-04 were collected near the <br /> former reboiler and were collected from soil cuttings removed during the abandonment of <br /> MW-2,which was abandoned prior to excavation activities as described in Section 3.3 <br /> (Figure 2).
