INFECTIOUS WASTE POLICY -PROCEDURE <br />It is the policy and procedure of the facility to dispose of infectious_ <br />wastes in the following manner. <br />Definition of Infectious Wastes - as defined by the Health & Safety Code <br />Section 25117.5 <br />In this facility the following will be handled as infectious wastes: <br />1. All soiled dressings. <br />2. All tubing having been in patient use. <br />3. Used irrigation sets. <br />4. All disposable collecting containers. <br />5. Used needles, syringes, having first been rendered unusable. <br />6. Any disposable equipment, instruments, utensils, or fomites <br />from rooms of patients with suspected or diagnosed communicable <br />diseases requiring isolation. <br />PROCEDURE: <br />1. The infectious waste item is placed in a red plastic bag for <br />infectious wastes, tied or taped closed & carried to the container <br />labeled "Infectious Waste" in the Utility room. <br />2. Infectious Waste container shall be lined with a red plastic bag <br />and have a leak proof, tight fitting cover and labeled on top <br />and sides with "Infectious Waste". <br />3. All sharp items (needles, instruments, etc) will be placed in <br />rigid containers & sealed prior to disposal. <br />4. The Infectious Waste container shall be emptied by Housekeeping no <br />less than once a day. <br />5. The red Infectious Waste bag shall be securely tied and removed <br />from the Utility Room. <br />INTERIM PROCEDURE: <br />Remove the double Bagged Infectious Wastes to the dumpster at rear of <br />building. <br />The dumpster shall be emptied by the disposal service no less than every <br />7 days & taken to a land fill dump. <br />NEW PROCEDURE WHEN DISPOSAL SERVICE AVAILABLE <br />Remove the double Bagged Infectious Wastes and keep separate from the other <br />refuse. <br />The Infectious Wastes will be stored in a specially marked area, secured to <br />prevent unauthorized entry and labeled with warning of presence of <br />"Infectious Wastes." <br />The Infectious Waste Red Bags will be picked up separately by the Disposal <br />Service & not compacted, no less than every 7 days. <br />
