INFECTIOUS WASTE POLICY -PROCEDURE It is the policy and procedure of the facility to dispose of infectious_ wastes in the following manner. Definition of Infectious Wastes - as defined by the Health & Safety Code Section 25117.5 In this facility the following will be handled as infectious wastes: 1. All soiled dressings. 2. All tubing having been in patient use. 3. Used irrigation sets. 4. All disposable collecting containers. 5. Used needles, syringes, having first been rendered unusable. 6. Any disposable equipment, instruments, utensils, or fomites from rooms of patients with suspected or diagnosed communicable diseases requiring isolation. PROCEDURE: 1. The infectious waste item is placed in a red plastic bag for infectious wastes, tied or taped closed & carried to the container labeled "Infectious Waste" in the Utility room. 2. Infectious Waste container shall be lined with a red plastic bag and have a leak proof, tight fitting cover and labeled on top and sides with "Infectious Waste". 3. All sharp items (needles, instruments, etc) will be placed in rigid containers & sealed prior to disposal. 4. The Infectious Waste container shall be emptied by Housekeeping no less than once a day. 5. The red Infectious Waste bag shall be securely tied and removed from the Utility Room. INTERIM PROCEDURE: Remove the double Bagged Infectious Wastes to the dumpster at rear of building. The dumpster shall be emptied by the disposal service no less than every 7 days & taken to a land fill dump. NEW PROCEDURE WHEN DISPOSAL SERVICE AVAILABLE Remove the double Bagged Infectious Wastes and keep separate from the other refuse. The Infectious Wastes will be stored in a specially marked area, secured to prevent unauthorized entry and labeled with warning of presence of "Infectious Wastes." The Infectious Waste Red Bags will be picked up separately by the Disposal Service & not compacted, no less than every 7 days.
