B. General Procedure for Handling Regulated Medical Waste and Preparing
it for Shipment
The Region will not knowingly transport or receive regulated medical waste
unless that waste is in compliance with all applicable laws, including packaging
and labeling requirements.
1. When packing, sealing, inspecting, or moving regulated medical waste
containers, use of personal protective equipment as detailed in the
Exposure Control Plan is required.
2. Prior to using a RMW container that will be the final container transported
by the RMW contractor for disposal, staff must:
• Examine the container to ensure that the RMW container is
properly marked or labeled with the shipping name "Regulated
Medical Waste, n.o.s.", UN number "UN 3291", the OSHA
Biohazard symbol and the word "BIOHAZARD" ON TWO
OPPOSITE SIDES of the container.
• Examine for visible external contamination. If external contamination
is observed, the exterior of the container must be disinfected.
• Examine for structural integrity (i.e. ruptures, breaks or holes).
Containers which are not structurally sound must not be used.
REGULATED MEDICAL
WASTE, n.o.s.
3. Before using a RMW container (either a plastic container or cardboard
box), staff will place a large plastic biohazard liner inside the container
to prepare for the discarding of biohazard waste. Staff will place all bagged
biohazard waste and plastic sharps containers inside this plastic liner.
4. During use of RMW containers, it is the responsibility of staff to place only
RMW in the RMW container. Other hazardous materials (i.e. flammables,
aerosol cans) must not be placed in RMW containers.
5. During the packing of RMW containers, staff must adjust contents so that
objects do not protrude from the shipping container, that the shipping
container is not overfilled, and that the container has no visible leaks or
American Red Cross Biomedical Services Safety Page 8 of 17
Regulated Medical Waste Program Program#023
