AMERICAN MEDICAL RESPONSE MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN
12.0 PROCEDURES FOR HANDLING RECOGNIZABLE HUMAN REMAINS:
12.1 AMR does not handle any recognizable Human Remains. The San
Joaquin County Coroner will handle any human remains encountered
at the scene of an accident or incident.
13.0 WASTE HANDLING AND STORAGE:
13.1 Engineering and work practice controls will be utilized to eliminate or
minimize exposure to employees at AMR. Where occupational
exposure remains after implementation of these controls, Personal
Protective Equipment(PPE) shall be used. At AMP,the following
engineering controls will be utilized:
Soiled first-aid equipment and bandages will be placed into red bags marked
"Biohazard," then placed into the large gray hard barrels at Operations.
"Biohazard" bags will be placed into in a D.O.T. lined approved drum
with the proper required labels and stored in the secured Infectious
Waste containment area for disposal by Stericycle. Infectious Wastes
are segregated into the following categories:
■ Sharps
■ Expired Medications
■ Bloody and used medical appliances i.e. bandages,
gauze or I.V. lines etc.
■ Contaminated linen i.e. sheets, towels or uniforms
The controls will be examined and maintained or replaced on a regular
schedule. The schedule for reviewing the effectiveness of the controls
will be to inspect the "Biohazard Waste Area" on a monthly inspection
schedule. Inspection logs are kept in the Operations Department.
Hand washing facilities shall be made available to the employees who
handle blood or other potentially infectious materials. Cal/OSHA
requires that these facilities be readily accessible after incurring an
exposure. AMR employees who come into contact with blood or other
potentially infectious materials must wash their hands immediately
after exposure. If an employee is exposed to Infectious Wastes, they
will immediately be taken to the closest treatment facility for an
evaluation by a physician. The AMR exposure paperwork(see
attachment"C")will be completed as well as a Worker
Compensation report form. The employee will attend any follow-up
sessions, check-up or other treatment as necessary.
5
